I like this answer. If the powers-that-be tell people "there is a god", a huge portion of people are going to think, "there is a god". If there's a profession which is dedicated to asking hard questions and not taking anything for granted, it stands to reason even "there is a god" will come under question there, where it doesn't for most people. I don't think that explains ALL the disparity, but probably a lot of it.
