"What reason is there to assume that a more intelligent or better educated person is more likely to have a correct opinion about a disagreement that cannot be settled rationally" - I think I would suppose that rationality is a useful tool for discovering truths in every realm we've tried it in, so I wouldn't expect questions about god or the origin of the universe to be an exception, to be the one realm of inquiry where miraculously rationality is inversely correlated with truth.
